Swiss Theatre Awards 2017 – This year in Ticino

This year the Swiss Theatre Award Ceremony and the Swiss Theatre Festival are to be held for the first time in Ticino. Swiss theatre will come together on 24th May at the refurbished LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura to honour Switzerland's creative theatrical talent. The award ceremony will mark the opening of the 4th Swiss Theatre Festival.

The Swiss Ministry of Culture is delighted that the third festival in Geneva last year established this event as the meeting place of Swiss theatre, and that it is now broadening its horizons by moving to Italian-speaking Switzerland. Reducing the event to a long weekend was a masterstroke, as is the tradition of opening the Festival with the Swiss Theatre Awards. Running events at the four participating theatres in Geneva was quite a challenge – and the accompanying programme gave rise to fascinating discussions between the professionals and theatregoers. Ticino will keep to established tradition: in addition to the festival centre in Lugano, two other theatres in Bellinzona and Chiasso will open their doors. The Teatro Sociale in Bellinzona was built 150 years ago in the style of the Scala in Milan, and is one of Europe's most beautiful theatre buildings. The Cinema Teatro in Chiasso also has a rich history.  Not only do both venues put on plays and dance, they have also served temporarily as cinemas - as the name in Chiasso indicates.

Federal Councillor Alain Berset will announce the winner of the Theatre Grand Prix/Hans-Reinhart-Ring 2017 at the award ceremony. In the run up to the event, and in keeping with tradition, the other theatre awards will be announced at the end of March; on 20th April at the opening of the Swiss Artists' Exchange taking place for the third time in Thun, the Swiss "Kleinkunst" Prize honouring cabaret and variety will be announced. Furthermore, at the beginning of the year the Swiss Theatre Society produced its third publication which featured last year's winner, the HORA Theatre. The Society established The Hans-Reinhart- Ring in 1957 and it remains the most prestigious Swiss Theatre award; it was merged with the national prize in 2014, and in 2017 celebrates its 60th anniversary.  And this year the Society will celebrate its 90th anniversary as it was founded in 1927. There are therefore plenty of reasons to book a theatre weekend in Ticino - and join the celebrations. We look forward to seeing you in Ticino.
