D'acier

D'acier is a captivating novel by Sylvia Avallone about people living under the scorching Italian sun and the sweltering heat of the nearby steel plant. The exciting stage adaptation of D'acier by Robert Sandoz takes place between scaffolding and mixing tables and depicts the wild nature of the story. Teenagers awakening to their sensuality, a steelworker brother in search of dignity, an abusive father and husband, another father who has abdicated his responsibilities. The young French-speaking actors find the urgent vein of this community that is grappling with its stifling day-to-day life.

This is not the first time that Robert Sandoz has transposed a literary work to the stage. In 2014, the Neuchâtel director adapted And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie for the boards, and before that, he successfully brought to the stage the psychoanalytical depth of Antigone, the excellent novel by Henri Bauchau. Similarly, he managed to depict in a performance the inner turmoil of Le Combat ordinaire, the cult graphic novel by Manu Larcenet. His talent stems from his broad and ambitious vision of directing.

Using decor, music, lights and movement, Robert Sandoz brings all the arts to the stage to better reflect the intention. The actors are not the focal point, but instead are part of the machinery that draws on their talents and invites them to excel. In this same spirit of articulated theatre, the actors change characters in plain view, suggest spaces merely by the power of the imagination and often play their roles facing the public, like storytellers gleefully aware of the artifice. Robert Sandoz is a pop singer when he is not directing. In his performances, we feel and appreciate this direct, frank and open relationship with the audience.
