Welcome to the festival of Swiss theatre! Welcome to Winterthur

It is for the second time that we present a prestigious selection of Swiss theatre, covering all its regional variations and characteristics. The Swiss Theatre Encounter is the most important platform for theatre practitioners from all of our country‘s linguistic communities and cultural regions. It also offers a venue for the examination and discussion of current issues concerning the theatre sector.

To maintain shared values and a common societal concept within a country comprising four individual languages and cultures is a unique quality. However, the current political debate about the relevance of French language classes reminds us, how important it is to nurture our communality and thus to surpass the limits of our respective linguistic regions. The Swiss Theatre Encounter is committed to fostering and developing this exchange, and therefore the 2016 Theatre Encounter will be held in Geneva.
From May 28 to June 6 we present a showcase of seven productions at Theater Winterthur, selected by our committed and competent board of curators. The invitation for the Swiss Theatre Encounter thus honours and celebrates innovative, aesthetically exciting and sophisticated productions alike.
The festival opens with the Swiss Theatre Awards ceremony, held by the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), represented by Federal Councillor Alain Berset. Addresses concerning theatre and culture will be held by Government Councillor Martin Graf und Zürcher Kantonalbank Deputy Chairman János Blum.
Fringe companies and large theatre institutions, cultural funding organisations and theatre academies all contribute to our festival‘s diverse supporting programme, which addresses various artistic, technical and societal aspects of theatre today.

Your attendance helps us put Swiss theatre at the centre of our society‘s attention for ten days, thus displaying all of its unique vibrancy and contemporary relevance.
The Swiss Theatre Encounter Society thanks all supporters, donors and sponsors of this year‘s Theatre Encounter.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to Winterthur.
